It's been a while since my last update here, and you have probably noticed I haven't been that active on the website and forum. As I look back on the past year and a half, I can confidently say that my journey at the Hot Rod Institute in Rapid City, South Dakota, has significantly shaped my skills and offered countless challenges. This experience has truly opened a new chapter in my life.

Discovering a New Passion

When I first enrolled in the Hot Rod Institute, I was driven by a desire to improve my skills. My lifelong admiration for vintage vehicles became my motivation to learn the skills needed for restoration and customization. I was fortunate to use my GI Bill benefits before they expired to help fund the adventure.

The curriculum covered essential skills like chassis modification, welding, metal shaping, upholstery, and refinishing. These skills are vital for anyone seeking to restore or customize their project. The institute attracts a diverse student body, including high school graduates, military veterans transitioning to civilian life, career changers, and retirees chasing their lifelong dreams. This variety enriched our learning environment, allowing us to share unique perspectives and insights.

My Project Journey

A standout feature of the program was the chance to work on my own project vehicle. I chose a 1957 GMC 100 pickup truck, a classic that had definitely seen better days. The emotional connection I felt for this piece of history fueled my motivation. Throughout my time at the institute, I transformed this pickup truck. Some of the customization included shortening the frame and bed (shortbed conversion), Mustang II front suspension with airbags, 4 link rear suspension with airbags, 5.3 LS engine with 4L60E transmission, power rack and pinion steering, 4 wheel disc brakes, tilt steering, and many other mods.

Every class was hands-on. I applied the skills I learned directly to my truck, reinforcing my understanding and boosting my confidence. I learned to weld better and also learned how to TIG weld, which was initially intimidating but ultimately rewarding. One memorable moment was successfully executing a challenging chassis modification that required both precision and creativity. With each skill I honed, I faced moments of frustration. Yet, pushing through those challenges became integral to my personal and professional growth.

Life Changes and Challenges

Moving from a spacious home in the country to an apartment complex in the city was a life-altering transition. The once-peaceful countryside was replaced by the constant buzz of urban life. At first, this change felt overwhelming. I had to adapt to communal living and the accompanying noise, which contrasted sharply with the tranquility I had always known.

While the adjustment was tough, it taught me valuable lessons. I began to appreciate the conveniences of city life, such as easy access to shops and services. However, I realized how much I missed the open spaces I had taken for granted. This balance brought a new depth to my life experiences, expanding my outlook in ways I never expected. The apartment living was just temporary so the house was empty for the year and a half we were gone. I am glad to be back home.

Skill Development and Personal Growth

My time at the Hot Rod Institute was truly transformative in terms of skill development. Each lesson added to my growing toolbox of abilities. I learned how to weld and and improve my upholstery skills. My confidence soared as I witnessed my own progress.

One pressing challenge involved ensuring each modification adhered to industry standards, demanding close attention to detail. Each class encouraged me to refine my skills, making me a more competent craftsman. What started as simple instructions evolved into a passionate pursuit of excellence.

I also interacted with classmates and instructors who significantly influenced my journey. We shared experiences, collaborated on projects, and celebrated successes together. This camaraderie enhanced not only my technical skills but also my emotional well-being.

The Great Escape Back Home

When it came time to leave the Hot Rod Institute, I found myself filled with mixed emotions. I was eager to return to familiar surroundings but saddened to say goodbye to the daily experiences of my project and the community.

Home presented unique challenges alongside its comforts. Returning to a serene lifestyle meant reorganizing my routine. However, I now possess enhanced skills and a broader outlook on life. My time at the institute impressed upon me valuable lessons about overcoming obstacles, embracing change, and welcoming new experiences.

Looking Forward

Reflecting on my time at the Hot Rod Institute, I realize this chapter wasn't solely about customizing a vintage pickup truck. It was about personal growth and renewing passion.

I am excited to apply the skills I acquired in my future endeavors both automotive and the off road world. As I work on projects as a hobbyist, the lessons I’ve learned will remain with me.

I am grateful for the challenges I faced and the experiences I gained. With renewed purpose, I am ready to embrace whatever lies ahead.

In closing, my time at the Hot Rod Institute in Rapid City was a journey filled with exploration, challenges, and personal growth. Although it was a unique experience to live in a new environment and master new skills, I emerged with not only technical knowledge but also a deeper understanding of the value of community and resilience.

Here’s to new adventures, classic trucks, and the road ahead!
